What Is A Longworth Chuck?

It is a specialized faceplate for holding a bowl, plate, or platter so the tenon on the bottom can be machined.

How does it work?

It uses two counter-rotating disks with rubber gripper buttons to gently secure the vessel.

When is Longworth Chuck supposed to be used?

At the very end of the turning process. You will have completed the inside and outside of the vessel except for cleaning up the tenon. The Longworth Style Chuck grips the vessel and gives you access to the tenon for machining.

How do I know which size is right for my lathe?

Each Longworth Chuck Type 2 is named for the size lathe it was designed to work best with. As an example, a 12” Longworth Chuck will work best on lathes that can spin a 12” vessel or larger. The standard factory-supplied faceplate will be threaded 1” x 8 tpi since that is the common spindle size for 12” lathes. 16”, 18” and 20” Longworth Chucks will come with faceplates 1.25” x 8 tpi. There are Metric options available for an additional charge, M33 and M30.

Note: The gripper buttons are approximately 1” in diameter. For the maximum holding capacity, you must allow 2” total from the stated size. A 12” Longworth Chuck can hold a maximum sized vessel of approximately 10”. Similarly, a 16” Longworth Chuck can accommodate vessels up to 14” in diameter.

What is a Longworth Combo?

In addition to the Longworth Chuck Type 2, a set of doughnut rings and hardware is supplied. The set has one large doughnut ring the size of the chuck with a 6” opening, plus 4 reducer rings; 5, 4, 3.5, & 3”. Vessels smaller than 6” can be successfully held using these doughnut rings.

The doughnut rings sandwich the vessel between the Longworth Chuck and the doughnut ring so it is held like a vice. You have 100% holding security and the vessel can never fly out when the doughnut rings are bolted in place. We recommend using the tailstock if you are NOT using the doughnut rings.

Can I start with a Basic Longworth Chuck and add the doughnut rings later?

Yes, you can order just the Doughnut Rings and Hardware at any time. It is listed as a Longworth Chuck Upgrade. However, the total price is much less expensive when you order the combo, to begin with.

I already own a Longworth Type 1 that mounts in a 4 jaw scroll chuck. Can I use the doughnut rings with a Type 1?

NO! Type one Longworth Chucks are not designed to be used with the Doughnut Rings and the plates are likely to crack, they are phenolic resin and are not meant to have anything bolted to them.

What sizes do you offer?

We manufacture Longworth Chucks Type 2 in the USA chucks in the following sizes:

10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20. We can provide 1x8 or 1.25x8 for all sizes on request. We offer a metric option on some sizes, not all.
