Ron Brown's Best™ Mini Steady Rest

The capacity of this mini steady rest is 1/8" up to a full 2". You will find it useful for holding or just eliminating flex and chatter on thinner workpieces such as:

Steady Rests can be used with or without the tailstock in place when working with a scroll chuck. When working between centers, the Mini Steady Rest helps remove the inevitable chatter from a thin workpiece. Walking canes are a great example. Sizes range from 32" to 38" and when you are trying to use any chisel near the middle, chatter can make life miserable. The same holds true for thin stair rail balusters and pool cues.

When you are trying to finish the ends of these items, it is really handy to be able to remove the tailstock and get a super fine finish with sandpaper right on the lathe.

I love these steady's when I'm drilling a shop made tool handle for a bowl or spindle gouge. I start with a 1/4" hole and turn the shape while using a scroll chuck and a tapered live center in the hole. Ultimately I need to size the handle for a particular diameter steel shaft. I can hold near the end of the handle with my Ron Brown's Best™ Mini Steady Rest and drill a true hole with a Drill Chuck in the tailstock without worrying about it wandering off center. There is nothing sadder than a cockeyed spindle gouge pointing at an angle.
